Seven Lake County recycling programs have been awarded a total of $146,000 in state grants to enlarge their operations as part of a $750,000 statewide program to improve recycling in Indiana, according to the Indiana Department of Environmental Management.
Among the recipients are Dyer, Highland, St. John and Schererville, which received $35,500 to start a joint yard waste composting program; East Chicago and Hammond, which received $30,000 and $28,500, respectively, to enlarge existing curbside recycling programs; and Gary, which received $30,000 to establish a curbside program.
