In the Feb. 9 Transportation section I read Stanley Ziemba`s article describing the United Airlines O`Hare Terminal. He has written about some place I have never experienced.
At one point, Mr. Ziemba used the words ”gigantic greenhouse.” Having waited for a flight for more than 45 minutes on a hot summer day, I can attest to the feeling of being in a greenhouse.
The article states that the terminal is ”an experience.” Indeed it is. The long noisy walks are burdensome, stressful and nerve-wracking. Mr. Ziemba states that the ”ambience makes up for any functional short-coming,” and he describes a 700-foot flashing neon sculpture. To a person being hurried along a moving walk and anticipating a flight into the sky, the flashing lights and noisy sounds of this area set off the nerve centers of most of its travelers. This high-strung area is not pleasant and certainly is not soothing.
