Women represent 50 percent of the callers to the State of Illinois AIDS hot line, which receives more than 4,000 calls per month, according to coordinator Bill Hocker. Most questions, he says, are about symptoms, testing and transmission. The confidential counseling service-operated by Horizons Community Services and funded by the Illinois Department of Health-is trying to recruit more women volunteers. ”Many women would feel more comfortable talking about these issues with another woman,” says Hocker.
