Sincere thanks to James Warren for his ”Media Watch” column of March 1. He says most ”big” papers, the Tribune included, ”haven`t mentioned a word” about the surprising generosity toward Iraq of President Bush and Secretary of State James Baker-right up to the day before Saddam invaded Kuwait.
Will the Tribune now keep us informed of Rep. Henry Gonzalez`s (D-Tex.)
efforts to initiate hearings on this secret help for Hussein?
The reasoning is that ”bits and pieces” had already been disclosed, and therefore it was okay to ignore the overall ”definitive version” of Bush and Baker`s backing for Iraq.
I wonder about that old hostage story. Do we now know all there is to know about the silence broken only after Ronald Reagan`s election was assured?
