The Feb. 29 ”Broom-Hilda” cartoon strip displayed appalling ignorance or deliberate insensitivity to people with mental retardation, who make up about 2 percent of our population.
The final sentence, ”morons doing crosswords,” was all the more offensive because it was gratuitous. The joke already had been made about
”duhhhhh” being an eight-letter word for ”the universal answer to all difficult questions.”
To use the mentally deficient as the butt of a nationally-syndicated joke is all the more reprehensible coming at a time when thinking and caring persons are trying to reduce the barriers that prevent the handicapped from enjoying life to their fullest potential.
