A strong campaign by parents has blocked a proposal by the administration in Lemont-based Community Consolidated School District 113 to increase class sizes.

The district has 1,400 pupils enrolled at three elementary schools.

School officials say enrollment is increasing about 50 pupils per year and is projected to be 1,781 for the 1996-97 school year.

Accordingly, district officials proposed increasing class sizes to between 25 and 29 pupils, but 60 parents rallied at a recent school board meeting to protest the plan and ask board members to hire more teachers instead.

The board tabled the administration`s proposal and asked it to consider hiring more teachers and adding mobile classrooms.
