In the Feb. 16 article ”National health insur-ance going to the dogs, cats . . .” your reporter refers to ”some insurers” who believe 1992 will be the year that Americans invest more money than ever before on pet insurance.

This seems completely outrageous for a country that already spends too much on human health care. Pet insurance is aimed at lowering the owner`s actual cost of animal health care by making consumers believe that the bills will be paid for by the company. What a joke! Consider the medical insurance offered to most Americans; at best one receives a policy that covers 80 percent of total medical costs, and not without a cap to be paid out by the insured.

Why? Because of the incredibly overpriced American health system. Once pet owners begin providing insurance for the dogs and/or cats in their lives, animal health care costs are sure to follow suit.
