UNICEF and the World Health Organization, calling mothers` milk ”the cheapest and best food ever available to infants,” have begun a campaign in 12 developing countries to encourage breastfeeding. The ”Baby Friendly Hospital Initiative” also seeks to end the supply by manufacturers of free and low-cost infant formula to these countries, because its exclusive use can result in malnutrition, they contend. Contaminated water, for example, can be a factor. Breastfeeding has declined in many countries, says UNICEF Director James Grant.
