Applause for Anna Quindlen`s March 24 column, ”Recognizing the commitment of same-sex couples.” I was happy to see someone finally approaching the subject without the holier-than-thou attitude that is so often taken.

Couples who wish to commit to each other, regardless of what sex they happen to be, should be recognized legally. The government has no place legislating what constitutes an ”acceptable” marriage. Not only is such legislation another form of legal prejudice, but the idea that the government can have any say in who may marry whom also opposes the intent of the Constitution.

Ms. Quindlen certainly summed up well when she wrote, ”Love and commitment are rare enough; it seems absurd to thwart them in any guise.”

Amen.
