A report released this month by the Canadian Committee on Women in Engineering, says schools must attract more women students to engineering and help those students to feel safe. The nation`s government formed the committee after the 1989 massacre of 14 female engineering students in Montreal. Its report followed a two-year study of discrimination against women engineers-who represent only 4 percent of professionals in the field-in hiring, job assignments and salary.
