Merrily Dean Baker, 49, will assume the post of athletic director May 15 at Michigan State University in East Lansing, the
second woman (after Barbara Hedges at the University of Washington) to lead a major men`s or women`s athletic department. The former assistant executive director of the National Collegiate Athletic Association will oversee a $14 million, 25-sport Big Ten athletic program with 850 student athletes.
