The ”Weed and Seed” program that was targeted at the Ida B. Wells housing development was the grossest violation of human rights I have witnessed in years (Tribune, April 7).
The description of CHA police with combat boots, nightsticks and handcuffs walking door to door in order to inspect, search and question every resident conjures up a vision of Nazi Germany. Indeed, U.S. Deputy Attorney General George Terwillinger stated, ”This is the first time we`re going to marry law enforcement and social services.” This is an undeniable
prescription for totalitarianism.
When will people wake up to the reality that government suppression is the cause and not the cure for most inner-city crime? The extreme violation of the Ida B. Wells residents` rights and the violation of the rights of every taxpayer to subsidize these police-state tactics are the real crimes committed here.
