I read with particular empathy the article, ”Evanston seniors seek sidewalk safety” (Tribune, April 1) regarding the safety of senior citizens being in peril with the advent of spring rollerskaters and bike riders.

Walking across Fullerton Avenue by the Sheffield intersection on a recent Saturday at about 5 p.m., with the light during heavy traffic, a roller-blader came at fast pace looking back over his shoulder without peering ahead. Naturally, he collided into me, knocking me down. There was no way I could have avoided him. I was lucky cars did not roll over me. I am still bruised and aching, and from earlier injuries from a mugging, severe arthritis has set in.

This could have been avoided. Rollerbladers and bike riders should adhere to the same precautions and rules which apply to pedestrians and motorists. The young man in question was not a teenager. He was over twenty and he should have known better.
