The House Appropriations Committee on Wednesday cut $3.35 million from the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory`s injector project as part of a package designed to reduce federal spending.
The money is part of the $15 million allocated for the project in fiscal year 1992, which ends Sept. 30.
Rep. Dennis Hastert (R-Ill.), whose district includes Fermilab, said the cut should not delay the project, but Fermilab Director John Peoples said,
”It slows us down.”
Fermilab has had difficulty obtaining the allocated funds. So far, only $2.5 million of the $15 million has been released by the Department of Energy, Peoples said. Hastert added that the department has agreed to release the remaining $9 million right away, which he said might actually speed up the project.
