The consensus was overwhelmingly positive.

”It`s nice,” Greg Hibbard said after Friday`s first look at the sparkling Oriole Park at Camden Yards. ”They did a real good job.”

”They should build more of these,” said Charlie Hough.

”The batting cages (under the stands) are nicer than ours,” said Carlton Fisk. ”They`re much, much nicer than ours.”

Hedging, and showing he`s no fool: manager Gene Lamont.

”It`s nice,” said Lamont. ”I don`t see that it`s any better than ours.”

– The Orioles obviously love the place. They began the night 12-2 at home. When they scored four runs in the ninth Thursday night to beat the Twins in front of the home crowd, it was their biggest ninth-inning rally in seven years.

– Fisk`s condition remains what it has been all week. ”There`s still a little swelling in the bottom of the foot,” he said. Meanwhile, he continues to jog, hit and hope the right foot improves enough (or his pain threshold improves enough) to let him do more. ”It`s up to him,” said trainer Herm Schneider.

– Frank Thomas extended his hitting streak to eight games with the second-inning homer. And with his fourth-inning walk, he extended his walk streak to nine games. In two of those games, he had three walks.
