Lorraine Mintzmyer, the first woman appointed a regional director of the National Park Service, has retired, saying she was leaving to avoid punishment or humiliation. In a letter to her supervisor, Mintzmyer says that ”it has been the intent of the Department of Interior to run me off my job-to constructively discharge me.” Mintzmyer, 56, testified before Congress last fall that pressure from the White House gutted a plan she supported to protect Yellowstone National Park.
