Taking a break: Scheduling conflicts have caused a temporary suspension of contract talks between Caterpillar Inc. and the United Auto Workers, a federal mediator said Thursday. Four meetings in three weeks failed to produce an agreement, and no new meetings are scheduled. ”I don`t expect anything until sometime next month,” said Thomas Montgomery, commissioner with the Peoria office of the Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service. He has been mediating talks since the nation`s top federal mediator, Bernard DeLury, persuaded the UAW to end its 163-day strike April 14 and resume negotiations.
