Men who are ”co-dependent”-meaning they focus on the personal and emotional needs of a loved one while putting aside their own needs-sometimes feel uncomfortable discussing their problems with women present, says Margo Reiner, director of chemical dependency services at Forest Hospital in Des Plaines. Reiner is trying to organize a men-only support group to begin meeting within a month. ”In the past, co-dependents mainly were thought of as female, the wives of alcoholics, for example,” Reiner says. ”But the definition has expanded to relationships in general.”
