A principal reason for feeling sorry that the urbane and witty Johnny Carson has departed is that he`ll be replaced by the bland Jay Leno. In one recent guest-host week, Leno made silly sexual jokes about Sen. Ted Kennedy four nights in a row. When will the bashing of the only one who could be called a people`s senator stop?
Kennedy answered a letter I sent him after the unfortunate confirmation of Clarence Thomas this way: ”I want to thank you for writing, to tell you how much your generous expression of support meant to me. I pledge to you that I will continue to speak out on issues about which we care so deeply-equal rights for all Americans, economic and social justice, affordable health care, and other urgent guarantees for our citizens-absolute guarantees which must serve as the cornerstone of progressive, compassionate government.”
Would that we had 50 more like Ted Kennedy in the Senate!
