”Lethal Weapon 3,” withstood the attacks of ”Alien3” and ”Far and Away” to hold on to the top spot at the nation`s box offices over the Memorial Day long weekend.

The Mel Gibson-Danny Glover action picture grossed $27.6 million in its second weekend for a total gross of $70.5 million, according to figures compiled Tuesday by The Hollywood Reporter.

The other major ”threequel” of the summer season, ”Alien3,” had to settle for a second-place debut with $23.1 million.

Among the other films which opened last weekend, the Tom Cruise vehicle

”Far and Away,” came in a distant third with a $12.9 million gross. The Valley Guy comedy, ”Encino Man,” finished fourth with $9.9 million.

The following are the top 10 movies for the four-day weekend of May 22, their distributors, weekend gross and total gross.

1. ”Lethal Weapon 3,” Warner Bros., $27.6 million, $70.5 million.

2. ”Alien3,” 20th Century Fox, $23.1 million, $23.1 million.

3. ”Far and Away,” Universal, $12.9 million, $12.9 million.

4. ”Encino Man,” Buena Vista, $9.9 million, $9.9 million.

5. ”Basic Instinct,” TriStar, $3.2 million, $98.2 million.

6. ”Beethoven,” Universal, $2.3 million, $43.9 million.

7. ”Beauty and the Beast,” Buena Vista, $2.1 million, $135.6 million.

8. ”The Player,” Fine Line, $2 million, $12.3 million.

9. ”White Men Can`t Jump,” 20th Century Fox, $1.7 million, $67.1 million.

10. ”Wayne`s World,” Paramount, $1.2 million, $113.9 million.
