Amanda ”Amy” Poole, 17, of Eldorado, Ill., has earned a one-year scholarship to Southern Illinois University-Carbondale for developing a cure for the leaf blight that threatens those springtime bloomers, irises. Poole, armed with $2,000 from the American Iris Society, spent a year in her family kitchen testing dozens of antibiotics to find an effective formula. ”I even tried Clorox and Lysol,” she says, because they would be commonly available to growers. Poole`s research is being published this summer in the American Iris Society Journal and she has been approached by iris breeders who want to market her formula.
