Here are some alternatives for common household chemicals:
Rug/Upholstery Cleaner-Sprinkle cornmeal or cornstarch on rug and vacuum; use club soda or soap-based shampoos on stains, dry and vacuum; rub salt into red wine stains.
Floor and Furniture Polish-Mix 1 teaspoon lemon oil with 1 pint mineral oil for furniture polish; mix 1 tablespoon melted carnauba wax into 1 or 2 pints mineral oil for floor polish. Use toothpaste to remove water spots.
Chemical Fertilizers-Peat moss, manure, compost, fish meal or clean grass clippings.
Enamel or Oil-Based Paints-Latex or water-based paints.
Drain Opener-Pour boiling water down drain twice a week; use mixture of vinegar and baking soda to unclog drains.
