Vice President Quayle`s comment that the Murphy Brown childbirth episode
”glorifies illegitimacy” is not only dead wrong, it is dead wrong on two counts:
1) Sitcoms can hardly be said to glorify anything. They are designed to constitute lighthearted, inoffensive entertainment.
2) The term ”illegitimate” implies that a child is somehow invalid by being born into an unpopular social context. I wonder how many thousands of so-called illegitimate persons have died defending this country, something our current vice president did not feel inclined to take a chance on. Perhaps he did not wish to glorify war by participating personally.
