Bolingbrook homeowners took aim and fired at a proposal to build a Target store adjacent to their neighborhood.
Target`s parent company, Dayton-Hudson Corp., wants to build a store that would anchor a proposed 460,000-square-foot strip mall near Naperville and Boughton Roads.
Residents of the nearby Woodleaf and Brookwood Estates subdivisions told the Plan Commission Wednesday they do not want a shopping center in their neighborhood and submitted two petitions, one with 75 signatures and one with 65, asking the village not to rezone the 30-acre parcel.
The land is zoned for single-family homes, but the owner, a bank trust represented by Naperville attorney James Saloga, is requesting a change to commercial zoning.
Village planners are recommending that officials approve the rezoning for the Target store, but deny the request for the strip mall.
A strip mall would be incompatible with residential areas to the north, south and east, planners said. Village staff said the parcel has been zoned single-family for almost 14 years.
Saloga said Dayton-Hudson would drop its plans to build a Target store and ”just move on” unless the entire shopping center is approved.
Discussion of the proposal will continue at the July 22 Plan Commission meeting.
