In Ronald E. Yates` June 14 article in the ”Back to Business” series, Stanley Marcus observed that ”by the year 2000, 75 percent of America`s retailers will be gone.” He stated that successful retailers will have to devise new methods to ”get closer to the customers.”

I thought it fitting that just a few pages away from Mr. Marcus` telling remarks, his store was running an advertisement for a ”Summer Clearance Sale.”

Here`s one thought on how to get retailers in touch with their customers: Sell items in season. Brilliant idea!

In June, my family was just breathing a happy sigh to greet the beginning of summer. His store has already declared it over.
