Novelist Alice Walker will read from her fifth novel, ”Possessing the Secret of Joy,” 7:30 p.m., Wednesday at Barbara`s Bookstore, 1350 N. Wells St.
Walker, author of ”The Color Purple” and ”The Temple of My Familiar,” is a native of Georgia and resident of California who has written on the African-American female experience.
”Possessing the Secret of Joy” is the story of a tribal African woman who submits to ritual genital mutilation out of misguided loyalty to the customs of her people. The book combines fact and fiction to explore and expose the practice.
