Mary Ellen Waghorn of Greenhome offers these recipes for homemade cleansers:

– All-purpose cleaner: Mix together 2 tablespoons borax, 2 tablespoons white vinegar, 1 tablespoon liquid soap and 1 1/2 cups warm water.

– Glass cleaner: Mix equal parts white vinegar and water.

– Scouring powder: Use baking soda or borax.

– Carpet cleaner: Mix 2 parts corn meal, 1 part borax. Sprinkle on dry carpet and vacuum.

– Floor cleaner: Mix 1/4 cup white vinegar with 1 gallon hot water.

– Furniture polish: Mix 1/2 teaspoon lemon oil with 1 cup mineral oil.

– Toilet cleaner: Sprinkle with baking soda, then vinegar. Swish with brush. Let stand 30 minutes.

For a fresh, scented smell, add a few drops of lemon oil or other essential oil to homemade cleaners.
