August began with an array of weekend violence ranging from gang-related murders to fatal accidents involving cars and trains.

Two teenagers were charged with first-degree murder Sunday in connection with the shooting of a 13-year-old South Side boy, according to a spokeswoman for the Cook County State`s Attorney`s Office.

Jason Anderson, 18, of 2710 S. State St. allegedly shot Sidney Gammons, in the hallway of the Stateway Gardens housing project about 7:45 p.m. Saturday, the spokeswoman said.

A juvenile who was charged allegedly handed a semi-automatic weapon to Anderson, according to the spokeswoman.

In another apparent gang-related incident, a teenager was killed and another injured Saturday night, according to police.

Derrick Scaggs, 16, was shot in the chest about 11:30 p.m. when a rival gang member opened fire at a party at 930 N. Long Ave., according to Sgt. Lee Epplen of Grand Central violent crimes.

Another man, Alex Howard, 29, also was shot and was taken to Cook County Hospital, Epplen said. Howard was in fair condition Sunday, a hospital spokesman said.

Another teenager was killed Saturday afternoon on the South Side when two teenagers walked up to him and shot him, police said.

Witnesses told police that Manuel Pruitt, 17, was standing in front of a liquor store at 13355 S. Indiana Ave. about 4:30 p.m. when the suspects, thought to be about 17 and 20 years old, shot him, according to Sgt. Rich Kobel.

A 51-year-old man was killed Saturday afternoon when he was hit by two cars in front of the transient hotel where he lived, according to police.

Lee Jones was hit once about 2:30 p.m. by a car traveling eastbound on Warren Boulevard, Smith said. He bounced off that car and was struck by another car traveling in the same direction, said Officer Bert Smith.

Walter Thomas, 52, was killed after he was hit by a train at 5800 W. Dickens Ave. early Sunday, a Grand Central police officer said.
