Generalizing from her own unfortunate personal experiences, Victoria Stagg Elliott assured us that ”Poland continues to be anti-Semitic” (Voice, July 10). Where do such invocations of collective guilt leave the brave sons and daughters of Poland commemorated at Yad Vashem for risking their lives to save Jews during World War II? In what country doesn`t racial and ethnic hatred exist?

I wonder if Ms. Elliott realizes that a belief in collective responsibility lies at the heart of anti-Semitism and all other forms of racial and ethnic hatred. It served the Nazis well in their murderous campaign against the Jews. Preventing future Holocausts begins with avoiding and denouncing all invocations of collective guilt.
