No, it is not legal to burn a cross on someone`s lawn, as Cecilia Kapelanski seems to think (Voice, July 20). She misunderstands the extent of the Supreme Court ruling on hate-crime laws.
The court`s decision says only that hate-crimes laws, which were devised to selectively impose punishment on those who advocate hate, are
unconstitutional. But a cross-burner could be prosecuted under existing laws such as unlawful trespass, criminal damage, breach of peace and conspiracy to commit a crime. A sharp lawyer could no doubt think of ten more.
