Glen Ellyn School District 41 has chosen Robert Goldman, chief of Evanston Township High School, as its interim superintendent for the next school year, said Jenie Ramsey, president of the Glen Ellyn school board.

Goldman, 53, was hired at a $94,850 annual salary by the Glen Ellyn board in a unanimous vote Monday night.

”We`re just very fortunate to have someone like him in our district,”

Ramsey said.

Goldman resigned the superintendency in Evanston Monday night after serving in the district for six years. He was replaced by Assistant Supt. Allan Alson.

Ramsey said Goldman became known to District 41 after working with it last spring on ways to improve education through collaborative efforts of school communities.

Though Goldman`s recent experience has been with a high school, he was superintendent for 13 years in a kindergarten-through-12th-grade district in South Windsor, Conn., before taking up his duties in Evanston.

Ramsey said that Goldman`s appointment was for one year while the district conducts a nationwide search for a successor to Arthur Jones, who resigned as Glen Ellyn superintendent to take over as head of Lake Forest`s elementary school district.

It was unclear whether Goldman would be a candidate for the permanent position in Glen Ellyn.

”He knows it`s our interest to have a search process and look and see,” Ramsey said.

Goldman had told the Evanston board that he wanted to leave the high school, where his yearly salary was about $104,000, before his contract expired next June 30.

Goldman was credited by the Evanston school board with establishing an all-school arts festival, called Bravo Arts, for students, staff and the community.

He was instrumental in setting up a computer center for students and establishing foreign travel programs for students.
