The July 20 column by Reo Christenson asserting that the senior citizens of this nation are at fault for our national debt is not only outrageous and insulting; it is also stupid. He says he is in his 70s, so he expects his words to have weight. Instead they show senility.
The senior citizens who participate in Social Security, Medicare and any other federally sponsored programs and ”entitlements” are receiving their earnings from a working lifetime of contributions and payments upon which they rightfully planned their later years-under the law.
If Mr. Christenson wishes to halt these merited benefits, let him advocate ”voluntary euthanasia” at, say, age 75. Since he claims to be in his 70s, he should be able to arrange his affairs and say goodbye, then he could lead the way to fiscal responsibility and budgetary salvation for the nation. Just as he advocates changing the age rules for Social Security, so might he decree that the age of ”patriotic euthanasia” be lowered at stated intervals so that eventually we could eliminate the ”problem” of the aged altogether.
He must learn that if one does not plan for speedy death, one has earned the right to the benefits of a life of labor!
