Bryan Trottier, who earned four Stanley Cup rings with the Islanders and two more with the Pittsburgh Penguins, may soon be working again at Nassau Coliseum.

Trottier, who is 36 and lives on Long Island, had hoped to play a third season for the two-time champion Penguins, but he said Wednesday, ”It doesn`t look good.” When asked about talk linking him to the Islanders, with whom he spent the first 15 years of his NHL career, the future Hall of Famer replied: ”I`m talking to them, and hopefully something fruitful will happen.”

Asked if he would like to work for the Islanders as a player or in a front-office role, Trottier replied: ”Either one at this particular juncture would be appealing.”

Trottier is a friend of Steve Walsh, one of four businessmen leading a group that will buy 10 percent of the franchise from John Pickett and assume management control. Walsh was unavailable for comment Wednesday, his office said.

Don Maloney, the Islanders` assistant general manager, said he couldn`t discuss Trottier`s job prospects.
