Bolingbrook has entered the second phase of a comprehensive plan to alleviate flooding problems and prevent future development from creating new problems.
The Village Board agreed Tuesday to hire SEC Donohue Inc., of Schaumburg, to study stormwater issues in the 10.5-square-mile section of town between Illinois Highway 53 and Naperville Road. Trustees approved engineering expenses for the village`s west side not to exceed $111,000.
Donohue is the same firm that did the engineering for the first phase of the plan, the east side of Bolingbrook. That report should be finished later this month.
The project identifies 13 problem areas where flooding occurs after heavy rains. Most of those involve street flooding near the East Branch of the Du Page River, Lily Cache Creek and tributaries.
West side areas prone to flooding include Lily Cache Lane, Glengary Way, Avondale Court, Naperville Road, Robinhood Way, Garden Drive, Briarcliff Road, Royce Road and Westwind Drive.
Engineers will recommend solutions and provide cost estimates for projects that could include replacement of undersized culverts and storm sewers, increasing the capacity of detention basins and clearing creeks of snags that slow the flow of water downstream.
Mayor Roger Claar said the village already knows that water flows generally to the southwest in Bolingbrook, but more detailed topographical data will help officials plan for the impact of individual development projects on the village`s booming west side.
The management plan, he said, will give officials the information they need to decide what stormwater management measures should be required of builders as they submit plans for new residential and commercial ventures.
”We think it would be foolish to wait until after some of these areas are built out,” Claar said.
