Your July 19 article about Pope John Paul attributed the slow growth of the Catholic Church in Europe and North America to dissent against the pope`s traditionalist policies.
This poses a question which the article failed to address. Shall the Catholic Church reflect current opinions or should it remain faithful to its original vision of society?
Let me reword the question. If two people were mountain-climbing and one fell to a ledge 200 feet below, should the other person jump down to save the fallen friend or remain in place and throw down a rope?
Ray Moseley described the Pope`s defense of Catholic beliefs as harsh. His actions have been no more harsh than those of a mountain climber who lowers a rope to aid rather than jump down 200 feet out of a false sense of empathy.
