In reference to your July 19 editorial on AIDS, there is so much more to the AIDS crisis than appears on the surface. What is most pathetic, however, is that it has taken the Republican leaders 12 years to even acknowledge the
”A” word, only for the purpose of getting votes in this desperate election year.
Your editorial board still doesn`t get it, either. It is not the amount of money available for research, it is the distribution of those funds, the administration of millions of dollars to universities, hospitals and laboratories. Remember that this administration was in partnership in the Gallo patent, now shown to have been a calculated ripoff of the French research team. What kind of leadership is this? They don`t even police their own grants?
Whenever millions of dollars in profit can be gained from research, the Republican administration has jumped right on board, making sure those investments are well financed. The result of this attitude has been not only faulty research but an almost criminal neglect of those studies that do not support the Gallo HIV theory. In 1992, we still do not know what causes AIDS.
