Chicago Lawn District patrol officers thought they were doing their civic duty Sunday afternoon when they helped the unknown driver of a broken down rental truck and had it towed to their West 63rd Street station.

What they got in return for their efforts was a load of street-ready marijuana, with a street value estimated at $1.6 million. They discovered the marijuana after other officers entered the truck to inventory it when no one showed up after several hours to claim it.

”If the driver still wants it he can come and try and get it, but we`ll arrest him,” said Cmdr. Hurley Schinker.

The marijuana was neatly packed in sealed and scented aluminum foil packets, apparently ready for distribution, Schinker said.
