There must be some kind of bug that comes around only every four years, and whose bite causes temporary ideological forgetfulness. How else could one explain the drastic transformation from liberal to moderate that some Democrats undergo every four years?
Dukakis and Mondale showed milder symptoms of this quadrennial bug`s bite, but Clinton`s case is a lot worse. He`s now emphasizing a set of values totally out of step with the Democratic philosophy. He is now embracing the family values Quayle is so hated for. And perhaps the most bizarre thing of all is that he has unexpectedly turned religious.
Now he prays in public, quotes the Bible and poses for nice TV pictures at Sunday church services. Furthermore, he says he is going to make ”New Covenant.” Should that happen, he would become only the second person in world history ever to do such a thing.
This is probably not very likely to occur. Chances are that on the morning after the presidential election, whether he wins or not, Clinton will awake totally cured of his temporary ideological forgetfulness.
