Cher
Extravaganza Live at the Mirage (BMG) (STAR)(STAR)
It`s hard to think of Cher as a concert performer, since she`s so much more associated with movies and tabloids. ”Extravaganza” was taped in Las Vegas for good reason: The glitz, glam and overkill of her show fit in perfectly there. With a cast of drop-dead beautiful dancers, backup singers and a full band including son Elijah Blue Allman on guitar and a male Cher impersonator, Cher moves through umpteen costume changes and elaborate sets. Even so, she`s still merely a lounge singer in an oversized showroom. Her backup singers support her heavily, she cuts out on the long notes by adding extra words (like ”babe”) and she merely strolls the long runways, never really getting into the songs she sings. But where else can you see a movie star in a G-string sing songs by the Eagles and Bruce Springsteen?
