A settlement reportedly worth $11 million was approved Monday between a shuttered Chicago hospital and the family of a 7-year-old boy who suffered brain damage during childbirth.
Attorneys for Augustana Hospital and Health Care Center and the boy, Thaddeus Simpson, had been scheduled to go to trial next month to determine whether Thaddeus was entitled to damages because of what occurred preceding his delivery May 16, 1985.
The boy`s attorney, Thomas Demetrio, said he had planned to call several witnesses to prove that doctors ignored warning signs that there were complications.
”The charges that they made were all refuted by top-notched experts that we had,” said Rudolf Schade, an attorney representing the hospital, which closed in 1990.
Under the settlement approved by Cook County Circuit Judge Donald O`Connell, the boy will receive damages from an annuity purchased by the hospital`s insurance carrier.
