Herbert J. Schiff, 70, a retired district superintendent for the Chicago Board of Education, died at home in Northbrook on Wednesday. He taught at the elementary, secondary and college levels, working at Chicago public schools for 45 years as both a teacher and administrator. Most recently, he was District 9 superintendent, overseeing schools on the city`s West Side. Mr. Schiff, an Army veteran from World War II, retired in 1990. In the early 1960s, he wrote a series of stories for the Chicago Sunday Tribune Magazine addressing educational issues. Survivors include his wife, Rosalyn; a son, Alan; a daughter, Cynthia; two grandchildren; and a brother. Services will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Congregation Har Zion, 1040 N. Harlem Ave., River Forest.
