Your editorial on July 26, ”Dan Quayle should go,” states that Quayle has been ”a loyal vice president . . . a competent U.S. senator . . . has argued for conservative causes . . . braved ridicule . . . smarter than his public image suggests . . .” and concludes that Quayle still is the object of national ridicule and therefore ”Bush owes Americans a new running mate.”

The ridicule began on the Tonight Show with Johnny Carson and Jay Leno leading an unfounded attack on the vice president which led to a feeding frenzy of abuse of Quayle by most of the other talk-show hosts and columnists in the country.

To list all of the positive achievements of an elected official and then conclude that he should be dumped because he is ridiculed by a bunch of glib, dim-witted comedians is an exercise in poor editorial judgment by an otherwise outstanding newspaper.
