Chicago and Chicago architecture have lost a loud and clear voice with the death of Paul Gapp.
I don`t think we`ll ever know how many thousands of people were turned on to architecture, its appreciation and its serious study by this one man.
We have lost a fine journalist and a courageous reporter. He shall be remembered by me for recognizing the merit of deco design early in the period of renewed interest in it, his integrity and courage in reporting what went on when we were trying to save the Esquire Theatre and preserve other buildings in this city, his careful interpretation of the architectural scene here and elsewhere, and for being a mensch.
