A new opera opening in London next month offers 10 demanding female singing roles, as ewes. Titled ”Yan Tan Tethera” and written by composer Sir Harrison Birtwistle, the opera tells the story of two rival flocks, the Wiltshire black-horned and the Northern white. The title is northern English rural dialect for `one, two, three` and refers to the shepherds counting their flocks. And yes, there are male roles: two shepherds and a ram.
