You don`t have to live on a boat to live in close quarters, as many an apartment dweller can attest. If lack of living space is a problem in your home, do what sailors do. Cut down on clutter.
Mark Ferdinand is the owner of Clutter`s End in Skokie, which carries home-organization products and storage systems.
”Clutter is a common condition,” he said, ”but fortunately there`s a lot you can do about it.”
Among his tips:
– Use odd areas to achieve extra storage space. Use under-bed boxes, door-mounted racks and wall hooks. Install a tension pole-mounted storage enclosure for over the toilet or in a shower stall.
– Store children`s things in open crates or stacking bins to make it easier for them to put things away. Keep like things in like boxes to encourage sorting.
– Install double hanging bars in closets to maximize space, hanging clothes on lower and upper bars.
– Store things in covered plastic bins rather than cardboard boxes. The plastic bins come in different sizes to help you maximize use of shelf space, and they also will protect contents from water damage.
– Use wire-mesh baskets in cabinets and closets so you can see what`s inside without rummaging around and making a mess. For more information, call 708-674-6300.
