You have no idea how ecstatic I am to know that ”cancer, while a major health problem, is under control” (Voice, Aug. 5). Having lost both my father and a close friend to cancer this past year, and now having to watch my grandson and my sister endure treatment for this disease, it is good news indeed.

As I see it, the determination of what illness should receive the greater percentage of available federal research funds should take into consideration the fact that cancer patients have no control over the causes for developing their illness, with the notable exception of smokers.

But people who continue to participate in promiscuous and careless sexual lifestyles do. They can control the spread of AIDS by choosing to change their sexual habits. It`s less demanding, though, to insist that the government take the responsibility.

With sincere consolation for the innocent victims of this dreaded plague, I side with the cancer folk.
