Why hasn`t Commonwealth Edison suspended its common stock dividend, as many utilities across the country have done in the same financial situation?
Cutting the dividend is not sufficiently effective.
One could name many electric utilities that began a restructuring program with this action, notably Illinois Power Company which is under the jurisdiction of the same regulatory commission as Edison. Another close-to-home example is NIPSCO in Hammond, Ind. These companies considered
responsibility to their customers more important than investors` welfare.
(Both companies have now recovered financially to the point of resuming payment of a dividend.)
