No, this foursome from Leeds, England, isn`t just regurgitating old styles, though they`re not above chewing on the occasional idea for minutes at a time. Cud is a clean-sounding guitar band that incorporates some modern syncopated beats but little of the current trend toward ambient noise. Singer Carl Puttnam mixes the impassioned and ironic-he sometimes sounds like Bryan Ferry in his earlier, wiggier period-and the band backs him with bounce
(”Rich and Strange”) or slow flow (”Once Again”), depending on his mood. The tracks that click have an inviting jitteriness; those that don`t find the band paddling in circles.
