Residents concerned about gang activity in their neighborhoods are invited to participate Saturday in the Community Unity Walk, ending in a park picnic.
The hourlong walk, sponsored by the township`s Task Force Against Gangs, is scheduled to step off about noon outside the township Town Hall, 1700 Ballard Rd., Park Ridge.
The walkers will head north, winding through several communities in unincorporated Cook County until they reach Dee Park at Emerson Street and Dee Road. There, they will join others attending the Gold Maine Park District`s
”Picnic in the Park” for an afternoon of food and entertainment.
”We`ll wind through the area, hoping to pick up walkers,” said Meryl Rivenson, the township official planning the walk. ”Otherwise, it would be only a 10-minute walk.”
The first 200 walkers to show up will receive T-shirts.
The T-shirts have the word ”unity” printed in 10 languages next to a circle of stick figures, representing the diversity of the human race. The languages represent just a portion of 40 or so languages spoken in the township, Rivenson said.
The anti-gang task force provides alternative programs for young people, family activities and neighborhood safety programs.
