The killer of an 11-year-old Waukegan baby-sitter was asked publicly Friday to look to his conscience, turn himself in and bring a $20,000 benefit to the victim`s family.
A deadline of 3 p.m. Saturday was set for the killer to come forth.
The unusual plea was made by the Midlane Country Club in Wadsworth, where Nancy Kalinoski, the mother of victim Holly Staker, has worked as a waitress for eight years.
Holly was raped and stabbed 27 times while baby-sitting in the 400 block of Hickory Street in Waukegan on Monday night.
Investigators said Friday that they were continuing their around-the-clock probe into the slaying and that they have interviewed several possible suspects. No one has been charged.
Before an arrest can be made in the case, approval must come from the Lake County State`s Attorney`s Office, which is following the investigation by Waukegan police and the Lake County Major Crimes Task Force.
At a news conference Friday afternoon at the Midlane, club manager Lenny Khayat asked the killer to save further grief to Holly`s family and confess to the crime.
Kalinoski spoke briefly at the news conference to thank again the many people who have given her support and contributed an estimated $15,000 to the Holly Staker Memorial Fund since the slaying.
”There are no words to say thanks for what you have done. Thanks,” said Kalinoski, who declined to answer questions.
Khayat said the country club and one of its owners, Thomas Rosenquist, would contribute $20,000 to the memorial fund if the killer surrendered by Saturday afternoon. Khayat held up a $20,000 check to show their good faith.
”Hopefully this gentleman (the killer) is looking for a way to make this situation right,” said Khayat, who has acted as spokesman for the family.
”We hope that he will right the wrong that he has done.”
Police said they have not determined whether more than one person was involved in the slaying.
